Gliding High

A music video to celebrate "Launch Day" for the first annual Glider Challenge. We've talked about how to "engineer" a good story. Does this video tell one?:

This song was a pop hit in Europe about the time that young Captain Olson was stationed on the "frontier". It recieved a lot of radio, music video and club play generating the artists/record label/royalty holders a nice paycheck.

How did the producers create the distinctive "hook" on this record? Does this Chaka Khan song sound familiar? What technology would Stardust have used to craft this tune?

Less is More

A great article on elegant design that Mr. Vollstedt pointed out to me.

If "Elegance" in design is doing more with less, how will the New Balance 890 accomplish this?

Which steps of the PLTW 12 step design process did the New Balance Designers use?

Be specific with your answers.

Gamification

I'd like to make this an "Opt In" assignment (fitting since it's about Game Design and the gamification of everything around us!) but don't have any questions for it yet.

So if you choose to pursue this one for an Opt In assignment, watch the video and create three questions and answers you think best capture the spirit of the video!

Super Advertising

What was your favorite Super Bowl commercial?

For your favorite commercial, how much product (cars, bags of chips, etc.) will the company in question have to sell to pay for their add? In other words, how much does a super bowl add cost and how much does the manufacturer make off of each widget they sell? How many people see a super bowl add? Do you think it's worth it to advertise during the super bowl? Suport your answer with numbers and explain your assumptions.

Challenger Disaster

25 Years ago today.

Old Mr. Olson actually watched this happen live on TV:

What technical problem caused this accident? Please describe with some detail.

What was the big picture problem that set the conditions for this accident?

What implications did this have for the US Space Program? For the nation?

What other challenges have the Space Shuttles encountered?

"We need to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world"

Who watched the State of the Union address this evening?

What themes from this speech resonate with our class?

What technology sector did the president compare to the space program of the 60's? What is the comparison?

What is the name of the new program that will replace No Child Left Behind? How do the programs compare?

Last semester we talked about the trapped coal miners in Chile. Why did the president conclude his speech with an example relating to that?

What's interesting about the President's chief speechwriter? What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?

Has this speech inspired you and if so how?

Adds...?

The question has come up whether you should enable adds on your blog.

What's the cost/benefit decision on hosting adds?

What's the goal of your blog? Does hosting adds support that goal? How do they make your blog feel?

How does a person make money off of adds on your blogger blog? What conditions would support monetizing your blog?

Let us know your take on the issue. Please discuss in the comment section of this post or address the issue with a post on your blog.

Carnival Splendor

Carnival Cruise Line's waylaid ship finally left port yesterday. Why did the ship sail for San Francisco to finish repairs when San Diego has the best shipyards on the west coast? The answer is distinctly Islander.

A shot of the Spledor at dock taken from the bay bridge back on a foggy December morning:

What was the nature of the problem the ship experienced?

What repairs were required?

What impact did the unnexpected arrival of the cruise ship have on the local economy?
